760 pages on the ox, for the veterinarians who study it

Anatomy of the Ox, D. Raghavan (chief ed.), P. Kachroo (technical ed.)

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research published this richly illustrated veterinary anatomy in New Delhi in 1964, with comparative notes on other domestic animals.

The story

To treat an animal, a veterinarian first has to know how it is built, and this book shows the ox in full. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research produced it for veterinary teaching and for agricultural research, with D. Raghavan as chief editor and P. Kachroo as technical editor. It works through the animal system by system, from the skeleton and muscles to the nerves and organs.

Along the way it compares the ox with the horse, the dog and the domestic fowl, so a reader can see how the same structure differs from one animal to another. The pictures are the heart of a book like this: the publisher’s advertising at the time counted 281 figures and 18 plates in the issued work, and the illustrated pages sampled here are relatively clean.

This copy served in a library, which has not been identified, before it was withdrawn. Both inner hinges have split, the rear one badly enough to expose the cloth beneath, though the boards are still present; the spine has faded to tan, the corners are worn and the edges are toned. It has not been collated against all 760 pages, the figures or the plates.
