Lucerne in eleven colour plates
G. Flemwell’s 1913 book is bound in pictorial brown cloth with a colour plate on the pastedown; foxing and edge wear come with it.
The story
G. Flemwell made this book twice over: in the words of its title page, Lucerne is “pictured and described” by him, so the pictures and the words come from the same hand. The title page also lists his earlier books, Alpine Flowers and Gardens and The Flower Fields of Alpine Switzerland, so this portrait of the Swiss city comes from someone who had already written about the mountains and their flowers.
Blackie and Son published it, under an imprint naming London, Glasgow and Bombay. The list of illustrations calls for eleven in colour, and a further colour picture is set into the brown pictorial cloth of the cover.
A Brentano’s ticket shows this copy was sold in Paris, by the booksellers on the Avenue de l’Opéra, and an advertising card is still with it. The edges and corners are worn and rubbed, and foxing comes and goes, heavily in places, through the preliminary leaves and the text. The colour plates have been counted from the list, not collated.
