Why do flowers and fruit fail? Botanists compare notes in 1926

Memoirs of the Horticultural Society of New York, Volume III: Papers Presented at the International Conference on Flower and Fruit Sterility, Horticultural Society of New York

This 1927 volume gathers the research presented at the Horticultural Society of New York’s international meeting on flower and fruit sterility in August 1926.

The story

Why do some flowering plants fail to reproduce, and some fruit crops fail to bear? From 12 to 14 August 1926 the Horticultural Society of New York brought botanists, geneticists and horticultural researchers together at an international conference to compare what was known about the causes of that infertility and its consequences.

Their papers deal with hybrid seed that lies dormant, the behaviour of pollen, how plants develop, breeding and the physiology of reproduction, with scientific photographs and diagrams. The society issued them in July 1927 as the third volume of its Memoirs, at a moment when the new science of genetics was starting to explain how plants reproduce, which gives the book a place in the history of both horticulture and genetics.

This copy is the original proceedings, not a modern facsimile or an offprint. It is in green institutional cloth, possibly a library rebinding, with rubbed corners and age toning; it was once a University of Virginia library book, later withdrawn. It has not been collated.
