Fashionable French society, sent up in brisk dialogue by the satirist Gyp
Petit Bob comes from the late nineteenth-century work of Gyp, the pen name of the comtesse de Martel, whose novels laughed at the manners of fashionable France.
The story
Gyp was the pen name of Sibylle de Riqueti de Mirabeau, comtesse de Martel, a prolific novelist and satirist. Her books are known for brisk dialogue and a close eye on the manners, expectations and absurdities of fashionable French society, often seen through family relations, and Petit Bob belongs to that world.
The work dates from her late nineteenth-century output. This copy is from the third edition issued by Calmann-Lévy of Paris; it is undated and was printed in 1914 or later. It is bound with a gilt-decorated leather spine and marbled boards; the corners are rubbed and the spine cracked and scuffed, and the text is clean to lightly toned.
