An engineer’s lifetime of dams, collected in a commemorative volume
Claudio Marcello’s papers on the large dams he worked on, gathered for Italy’s national committee on large dams, with diagrams, plans and photographs.
The story
Claudio Marcello was an engineer of large dams, and this book, published in 1969, gathers his writing in tribute to his work. His papers take on the hard problems of the field: how hydroelectric structures behave, how a dam is founded on the ground beneath it, and how to run construction sites of great complexity.
Much of it is drawings, plans, charts and photographs, which make the book a picture of how big dams were designed and built in the middle of the twentieth century, large Italian projects among them. The articles are in Italian and French.
The volume is very large, about 30 centimetres tall, bound in grey cloth with its title stamped in gilt, and it still has its matching grey cloth slipcase, worn, with a label on its spine. The cloth is faded and there are scattered age spots inside; it has not been collated plate by plate.
