Velvet worms, centipedes and the first of the insects
The 1901 corrected reprint of Volume V surveys Peripatus, myriapods and the first part of the insects.
The story
The Cambridge Natural History was Macmillan’s zoology in many volumes, edited by S. F. Harmer and A. E. Shipley, and this fifth volume takes in three groups of small creatures. Adam Sedgwick writes on Peripatus, the velvet worms; F. G. Sinclair on the centipedes and millipedes; and David Sharp begins the insects with the first of their orders.
Black-and-white drawings run through the text, and the book shows how zoologists at the end of the Victorian age described and sorted these animals. It was first published in 1895; this issue of 1901 was reprinted with corrections.
This copy is Volume V alone; the second part of the insects, Volume VI, is not here. It is in the original dark green ribbed cloth, with a gilt spine and gilt stripes on the cover. The front board has pale blotches, scuffs and stains, the edges and spine are lightly worn, and there is scattered foxing at the front and through the text. The pages and illustrations have not been checked through to page 584.
