Lincoln’s prairie years, 1809 to 1861, written and drawn by Raymond Warren
In 1937 Raymond Warren gave this copy of his first book to Ross D. Netherton, “as a token of its author’s high admiration”: a life of Lincoln from his birth in 1809 to 1861, with Warren’s own pictures.
The story
The Prairie President follows Abraham Lincoln from his birth in 1809 through the national crisis of 1861. Raymond Warren wrote it and drew it: the illustrations, a portrait frontispiece among them, are his own. The Reilly & Lee Co. published it in Chicago in 1930.
It was his first book, and he said so. On August 21, 1937 he gave this copy to Ross D. Netherton, with a dedication in ink: “This book, my first, goes to you as a token of its author’s high admiration and affectionate regard.”
The brown cloth, with a gilt cameo on the front and gilt lettering on the spine, is moderately rubbed.
