The Virginia Plutarch
The story
Philip Alexander Bruce’s illustrated, two-volume history presents Virginia’s colonial, revolutionary and national contributions through biographies of notable figures.
Published at Chapel Hill in 1929, the set divides its narrative into The Colonial and Revolutionary Eras and The National Era. It includes portraits of Pocahontas, George Washington and other major Virginian figures, along with early maps and reproductions of period images. The publisher issued a separate numbered, signed vellum-backed version of the work; these are the regular two-tone cloth volumes. A decorative ex-libris of Lucien Minor Abbot is mounted inside one volume, documenting an earlier named owner without establishing a special association with the author.
