Watergate in five original documents
Senate hearing books, the select committee’s final report and other government publications from 1973–1975 document the Watergate hearings, the impeachment inquiry and the special prosecution.
The story
These five volumes follow Watergate through the government’s own publications, in the order they appeared. The Senate set up a Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities under Senate Resolution 60, and its hearings were printed in numbered books: Book 1 covers five days in May 1973, and Book 6 the sessions held between July 18 and 25, 1973.
The committee’s final report followed in June 1974. That August the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Peter W. Rodino, Jr., reported on the impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon, and in October 1975 the Watergate Special Prosecution Force published its own report. Together they are the record the government made while the crisis was unfolding and just after it: the investigation, the findings, the impeachment inquiry and the prosecution that followed.
The two hearing books are separate parts of a much longer series, not a complete run. All five are in their original paper covers, in green, tan and blue, toned, faded, creased and worn at the edges, and the thick Senate final report has a creased spine. The pages have not been checked one by one, so any notes or inscriptions inside are unknown.
