A year of Broadway kept as a journal of occasional notes, 1936
Stuart Chevalier’s illustrated reflections follow the months on Broadway and in New York, mixing impressions of the streets with literary and philosophical commentary: an intimate alternative to the conventional city guidebook.
The story
Stuart Chevalier’s subtitle describes the book better than a blurb could: A Journal of Occasional Notes on This Present Scene and What May Lie Beyond. He uses Broadway in two senses, as a street with its crowds, characters and changing sights, and as a window from which to look out on the life of his time.
The entries run through the months, so the book moves with the city’s seasons, and the notes pass easily from what he saw in the street to what he had been reading and thinking. Pictures of the city go with them, among them a New York scene in snow. Read now, it is a glimpse of New York in 1936 through one observer’s eyes.
It was printed by The University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and bound in blue cloth with the title in gilt on the spine and a printed label on the front. The corners and spine ends are rubbed, with light spotting and toned pages; there is no dust jacket.
