Naples in 1900, described by its own writers

Napoli d'oggi

This illustrated anthology, issued by Luigi Pierro and printed over May and June 1900, gathers contributions on Naples’s culture, people and urban life.

The story

Napoli d’oggi means “Naples today”, and the book set out to show the city just as the twentieth century began. Its publisher, Luigi Pierro, gathered pieces from many contributors, several of them well-known Neapolitan writers, on the city’s culture, its people and its life in the streets.

Photographs and engravings run through the text, recording streets and neighbourhoods, monuments and customs at a time of great social change in Naples. Read now, the pictures matter as much as the words: together they keep a record of how the city looked and lived in that year. The text is in Italian, printed by L. Pierro and E. Veraldi.

This copy is in plain blue-gray cloth with the title in gilt on the spine; the record does not know how old the binding is. The edges are lightly rubbed, and some of the illustrated leaves are spotted. It has not been collated.
